This pistol scabbard for a "Texas Model" Colt is a our take on an original, period scabbard shown on page 152 of "The Paterson Colt Book." It's a close fitting "pipe" style with an open top and correct round muzzle plug with drain hole. Tear drop muzzle plugs were not used until the late 1880's and the advent of machines for sewing leather. The pistol is retained by a strap positioned behind the hammer. Completely hand-sewn with linen thread treated with a mix of beeswax, tar, and linseed oil. All materials and construction techniques are totally correct for the period and the seam edges are correctly beveled for a proper joint. These are details not typically seen elsewhere.
This "holster," to use the modern term, is correct for Texas civilian and militia use for any year after 1837. This scabbard can also be used by members of the Texas Navy and Marines depicting the years 1839-1843 and for Texas Army Regulars, Texas militia, and Texas Rangers depicting the period 1843-1850.
